Each slab is painstakingly inspected for fissures. From there, the best sections of the slab are identified and carefully optimized to both maximize the beauty of the stone but also ensure the final piece has an aesthetically pleasing shape. Careful consideration is given to keeping pieces close to 3:1 ratio or the golden ratio in terms of length and width.
We use a special imaging software to view the final form of each piece before programming the saw. Finally, each slab is of to be cut using a state of the art 5 axis CNC saw-waterjet. |
In the world of stone there is one truth. The more beautiful the stone, the more fragile it is. This is why each onyx wall piece is heavily reinforced with an engineered quartz backer.
Without the added strength of the frame, we would have to skip the back polishing step and the luminosity would be compromised. Once glued up each lamp is rock solid. |
Since each piece requires a led panel that perfectly matches its contour we create these panels in house and specifically tailor them to each piece. The LEDs require very careful placement to both fully illuminate the piece and completely eliminate potential dead spots. The lights must also be kept at a set distance from the stone to more evenly distribute the light. We use a combination of backer board, acrylic and a subframe to position each LED just right.
